Bug Safety

Cicada found in Chicago, IL, USA

Some folks in Missouri couldn’t sell cicada ice cream.

Sparky’s approached the Columbia/Boone County Department of Public Health and Human Services and asked about the use of cicadas in the ice cream, Gerry Worley, environmental health manager for the department, said.

“The food code doesn’t directly address cicadas,” Worley said. “We advised against it.”

What has this joint come to that we can’t even eat insects without worrying about food safety.

Does the Department of Public Health and Human Services over there know something?  Dastardly spraying by some dubious Megacorp?  Local ice cream testers sprouting insect wings?

Better safe than sorry?

Lame publicity gag?

I bet some of these grasshopper recipes would work if you happen to have a bunch of cicadas on hand and aren’t going to use them for ice cream now.
